So, we finally went to a show for 2017 and what fantastic results for our beagles! This is the second year in a row I have won Best In Show at The Beagle Club of QLD Inc. Open Show. Last year was with Keeper at his last show before he was desexed, and this year was with his half sister Poppy at her first show of the year.

CH Houndmaster Gold Threads – Best In Show (OS) under Judge Mrs Lynda Trotter

Not to be outdone, Poppy’s son, and our home bred boy Oscar (Asalei Golden Keepsake) was Reserve Dog (2nd best dog) and Minor in Show! I wasn’t going to show Oscar at this show as I just didn’t feel he was “ready” and past his gangly/fugly puppy stage, but he certainly proved me wrong! I am very excited about the dog he’s maturing into.

Keeper was awarded Best Neuter in Show at the same show he was BIS at last year. Judges always ask me “why neutered”? Yes, he’s a beautiful boy, and I would have loved to do big things with him as an entire dog, but at the end of the day, his health and ensure we have many many years with him, was more important than any ribbons he could have won. And, we have the best of both worlds now, he wins pretty ribbons, AND he’s fit and healthy and going to be around with us for a long while yet! We love our Keepie <3

Dinnies was placed 3rd of 7 entries in Intermediate Dog class, and was awarded Best Headed Dog.

Overall, a wonderful night for our beagles and a great start to the show year ahead!

I don’t ever recall it being this hot for this long before.

We haven’t been doing much lately due to the extended periods of heat we’ve been having. I’ve been entered in dog shows, but haven’t been attending as the health and welfare of my dogs is far more important than any ribbon or points could ever be.

My babies spend most days inside in the aircon. They eventually venture outside about 4pm once it’s cooled off a little bit. We are heading into another hot weekend again this weekend with predicted temps at home of 37°C (98°F) and 39°C (102°F). There are dog shows scheduled for this weekend in hotter temps than at our house as they are further out west. I will never understand people putting their dogs through the stress of driving to a dog show in the hottest part of the day, and sitting in the heat… for no other reason than to attempt to win a ribbon or get those extra points for the point score. No ribbons or points are worth more than the life of my dog.

Once it starts to cool down again, we will be heading back to the show ring!

Our August litter have turned 6 months old and are just so beautiful. Hard to believe they are 6 months old, but it feels a lot longer ago than 6 months! Time just goes way too fast these days. Oscar is a gorgeous combination of his mother and father and we see so many traits of both of them in him. Now, if he could just stop taking everything inside out, and bringing everything outside in… that would be great!

The power of social media is amazing!

Asalei Beagles enjoying chasing a remote control car.

For anyone that knows us, and knows our dogs… they live a pretty damned good life. One of our favourite things to do, is run the remote control car around the back yard for a good old fashioned chase.

A few weekends ago, I filmed our guys doing this and put it on Facebook. Andrew asked me to put it on Youtube so he could send the link to a friend to show them what we get up to. Next minute, Andrew’s put it on Reddit, and I’m getting phone calls, emails and messages from everywhere from companies wanting to promote it, or do a story on it.

This is just mind blowing to us, as it’s part of our and our dogs normal life, to chase the car around the back yard. It’s the reason we bought acreage and one of our main requirements when searching was an open space for our babies to run around in and have fun. When we saw this property, we knew it was the one! We hated the house, but that wasn’t the reason for us moving. The reason for us moving was so our dogs could have a better life and acreage to enjoy.

People are very quick to judge others, and social media is definitely the worst platform for this. We are registered, purebred breeders with Dogs Queensland. We have a licence with Logan City Council to have our dogs. They live in an airconditioned house and have access inside and out 24 hours a day. In winter, the heater is left on inside for them. We take them to the beach at every opportunity we get. Opportunities aren’t as common as they used to be due to other commitments, but we do try. When they aren’t lounging inside, or chasing the car, they are show dogs with lots of lovely wins to their names.

So, if you haven’t seen it yet (… really? You aren’t one of the nearly 20 million people who have watched it??), below are a few links to the videos.

Enjoy the videos, I hope it brings a smile to everyone’s face, like it does ours when we see the pure joy on our dogs faces as they do something they love!

Asalei Beagles

We look back at the fabulous year we’ve had with our beagles! This year saw Abby awarded Best in Specialty Show, Multiple Best in Group awards and a string of challenges which edges her ever closer to her Grand Champion title.

After having to desex Keeper due to health issues, we decided to enter him into shows as a Neuter and boy did he take the shows by storm! Keeper earned his Neuter Title in 7 shows, being awarded 3 Best Neuter in Shows, and 2 Reserve Neuter In Show awards. Keeper has found a new lease of life, and is thoroughly enjoying his time in the ring with me.

2016 also saw the addition to our pack of Poppy from Houndmaster Beagles in WA. Poppy’s pedigree adds valuable lines to our breeding program and she has proven to be a lovely producer with her first litter arriving in August.

From this litter, we are running on Oscar who has had some lovely wins as a baby puppy with 2 Baby Puppy in Group awards. This litter also brought two new lovely families into our lives, whom we’ve shared some lovely weekends with since. We are extremely lucky to have found some wonderful families for our babies to be spoilt by.

With the wonderful results of 2016, we look forward to what 2017 holds for our beagles in the show ring. On the home front, I’m sure it involves lots more lounging around in the air conditioning, chasing their remote control car, and beach trips!

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

WE DID IT!

There’s one thing I’ve always wanted for my princess, one thing that’s eluded her at every specialty we’ve entered…. until 06th August, 2016.

Abby was awarded her very first Specialty Challenge, and converted it to her first Specialty Best In Show! I can’t believe it! She has always been the bridesmaid with 5 reserve challenges at specialties under her belt.

A huge thank you to the judge on the day Dr Catharina Linde Forsberg. It was certainly a dream come true, and I got to be on the end of the lead to handler her to this amazing win. Huge thanks must go to her Breeder, Sara Skinner, for showing her in her class. Due to my injuries (which subsequently got worse on the lap of honour), I wasn’t able to show her the whole way. Without Sara showing her in her class, I don’t think I would have made it through to BIS with my princess.

Dreams do come true! Abby has had an amazing year this year, with multiple BIG’s, and now a specialty BIS… we will push on and hope to achieve my goal of obtaining her Grand Champion title. Wouldn’t that be awesome… the dream continues!

I just love this girl so much, we’ve had some amazing wins together.

Why does time go so fast?

I can’t believe how quickly the last 8 weeks have gone. It has seriously just flown past. It doesn’t feel that long ago that Poppy had the babies. I still feel like I could sleep for a week, but alas, life must go on.

Yesterday, the three girls from our litter went to their new forever homes. This never gets any easier. I think though, when the time comes that you don’t feel sad that these little beings that you’ve raised for the past 8 weeks, are leaving home, then maybe I shouldn’t be doing it anymore?

Chelsea and Lil will live their lives together and be spoilt rotten! While, Georgie has gone to live with her new sister Patches, and her part-time sister Xena.

At home, we have kept Oscar. At 8 weeks, he shows a lot of promise and we hope he will develop well and be a great contribution to our breeding in the future.

Enjoy your new lives babies! Be spoilt rotten, loved and cherished every day.

Devastatingly, at just 36 hours old, we lost one of our precious girls. This photo below might look like a lovely serene moment with mother and puppies, but to us it breaks our heart. The empty space of our precious little girl. Rest in peace sweet baby. You weren’t meant for this crazy world.

Well, a lot has happened since I last updated our website. We have moved to acreage and the pack love their new back yard, all 4000sqm of it! Their favourite toy is a remote control car, and destroying it.

Grandma also moved with us as well. The dogs all enjoy having an extra set of hands around the place for pats.

We have purchased a business, so time to do other things is very limited at the moment!

I will try and update with our major wins over the past 10 months to update you all.

Andrew and I decided to drive down to the NSW specialties this year. This was good because it meant I could take a few dogs down with me! Abby had other ideas, coming into season a few days prior to the specialty! Great. Luckily Bo doesn’t care so much about all that yet as he doesn’t know what it means.

We took Abby, Bo, Kong and Trixie to Sydney with some great results! On Saturday under Mr Deryck Player (Lyndex Beagles, UK), Abby was 4th in Open class, and Kong was placed 1st in Baby Puppy Dog. Andrew loves this dog and told me he’s a Baby in Show winner for sure! He was right with Flo, but Andrew picks a dog on their personality… and I’ll give him that. Flo and Kong both have gorgeous personalities 🙂 The weather on the Saturday was just awful. Raining, Windy and Cold. Three things I hate about weather. When I put Kong back into the car after his class, he was shivering so bad. Andrew wrapped him up in a blanket to warm him up.

We went back into the ring for Baby in Show and lo and behold, Mr Player awarded our little boy, Baby in Show. It was quite an emotional win for me, as I had won this same award with his mummy, 5 years prior at our first specialty weekend together. It was such an honour to win our first Baby In Show with a home bred baby.

On Sunday at the 99th Championship Show, Kong again won his class, and was awarded Opposite Baby Puppy in Show. So a fantastic weekend for our little man! Abby placed 2nd in Open Bitch class and Bo was 4th in Intermediate dog. Trixie enjoyed herself 🙂

Wow, it’s become quite clear that I suck at updating our website. It’s been 9 months since the update and a lot has certainly happened in that time!

We have only had two litters, but our recent litter was a lot different to the first. It made the first seem like a dream. At two weeks, a special little boy started to fall behind. I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotionally and physically exhausted in my whole life. Poor Andrew, he would come home from long days at work, to me in a state and a sick puppy. After numerous vet visits in the wee hours of the morning (Thank you Eden & Andrew!), and friends giving us advice and equipment, we seemed to manage to get him through. I believe the key was keeping him hydrated through this time. Without that, I’m most certain we would have lost him. A more specific explanation on “Spotty” can be found here.

After finally getting Spotty back on track, things turned bad for my gorgeous girl. On the 1st of December, our nightmare continued… I’ll write that in a separate post too!

The babies all went off to their new homes. Red and Jasper with a lovely family on the Gold Coast. Spotty (now Charlie) went to a home with one of the puppies from our first litter. Two went to Melbourne, and we kept two, with one returning from Melbourne. So, we have three of the litter of 7. *sigh* We sure do suck at this breeding thing.

On to the next update!
